Challenge — Wrangle a fragmented and inconsistent customer experience on mountain.

The Solution

Structure and accessibility standards appropriated from leading government bodies.

Developing the first-ever suite of wayfinding guidelines for Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, and Mt Hutt was an essential step toward creating a consistent and accessible signage system across the three resorts.

The project aimed to establish a unified approach to directional, interpretive, and safety signage, ensuring a clear and structured customer experience while still allowing for each resort’s distinct brand to come through.

A critical focus of the guidelines was accessibility, which was woven into the design to ensure that signage was easily readable and inclusive for all visitors. Drawing inspiration from best-in-class resources such as Public Transport Victoria (PTV) and university accessibility standards, I worked to incorporate key elements like colour contrast, font sizes, and icon clarity. While there were some limitations in fully implementing world-leading accessibility standards due to time and resource constraints, we ensured the foundational elements were in place as a step in the right direction. This has opened the resorts up to greater focus on improving accessibility in future initiatives.

Despite these constraints, the guidelines successfully created a cohesive approach to wayfinding across the three mountains, without compromising the unique identity of each resort. By integrating mountain-specific fonts, colours, and icons, the resorts maintained their distinct brands while benefitting from a structured and consistent system. The resulting guidelines have provided the resorts with a framework that not only ensures a more intuitive visitor experience but also sets the stage for further improvements in accessibility and customer engagement in the future.
